InsideSessions Case Study

OVERVIEW
InsideSessions is a joint venture between two of the world’s largest media conglomerates—Vivendi/Universal and Penguin Putnam, Inc. In their combined stables, they have a wealth of creative talent whose experience in their respective fields is extremely valuable to individuals looking to break into the “big leagues”. InsideSessions’ concept was to unlock this talent and make it available online via the world’s most sophisticated distance learning and mentoring program.

BUSINESS CHALLENGE
In bringing InsideSessions to life, Vibrant (formerly KORE) sought to transcend the existing paradigm of selling one digital product at a time and create a dynamic environment for the secure sale of and access to proprietary content. InsideSessions’ content included streamed video interviews with featured artists such as Sting, Elton John, Fred Durst, Tom Clancy and Kurt Vonnegut, in which they discuss their trades and what it takes to succeed. Relational content such as contracts, biographies, highlighted quotes and links that facilitate user interaction were also to be made available to the viewer. To truly meet the client’s expectations, Vibrant’s challenge was
two-fold:

	•	Create a technology platform that could manage the input of encoded video clips and integrate with best of breed technologies to synchronize them with interactive content,
	•	Sell and distribute them to both Mac and PC environments, all the while preserving the rights of the copyright-owners.

THE SOLUTION
Given the types of content InsideSessions wanted to integrate, the amount of interactivity that they were looking to achieve and the different platforms and internet connection types to be accommodated, it was a given that the solution should be solidly based on industry-standard protocols.

	•	Sophisticated, multi-platform Flash interface with clean, efficient navigation
	•	XML/ Soap interface: Build best-of-breed dynamic interface to support reliable delivery of content.
	•	Administration tools designed to build versioned products to allow updates. Allow immediate integration of new products, promotions, customer service issues, and price changes.
	•	Integration with offline distributed consumer CD-ROM of content to improve performance of users experience with low bandwidth connections.
